Buddy Bengel is an entrepreneur and businessman, North Carolina born and bred.
At a young age Buddy Bengel learned that hard work and determination are two important factors to success. He continues to integrate these two characteristics into everything he does. When he’s not cooking meals for the people of New Bern in one of the restaurants he co-owns, Bengel can be found on the baseball field mentoring players of the Morehead City Marlins. The Marlins were a dream that became a reality after a college business plan was brought to life. Another entrepreneurial success was the creation of Butter Syrup; a bottled version of the signature syrup found at Baker’s Kitchen, one of Bengel’s restaurants.
As an active philanthropist, Bengel believes in dedicating time and resources to many community organizations, including: the Swiss Bear Downtown Development Corporation where he currently serves on the Board of Directors; the NC Restaurant & Lodging Association as a Government Affairs committee member; and the Carteret County Navigators Rotary Club. Most recently, Bengel founded the New Bern Relief Fund, created to help New Bern residents get back on their feet after the devastating effects caused by Hurricane Florence.
He was the recipient of the 2019 Ken Conrad Award for Service to the Community, as well as the Good Neighbor Award, presented by the North Carolina Restaurant and Lodging Association. Bengel also currently holds the position of Marketing & Gaming Committee Chair for the North Carolina Education Lottery Commission—an appointed position by former Governor Pat McCrory.
In prior years he has served as a member of the Carteret General Hospital Foundation Board of Directors, as well as the Carteret County Economic Development Board, is a graduate of Leadership North Carolina, Class XXIII, as well as a graduate of the prestigious Presidential Leadership Scholars program.
Bengel attended Quinnipiac University where he received his Bachelor’s degree in Business Management and his Master’s degree in Business Administration. After graduation, he went on to play professional baseball both stateside and abroad in Italy. He currently calls Eastern North Carolina home.
